Islamic Republic is the only country in the region which has voiced its support for the demonstrations in Tunis and Egypt – from Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani, deputy head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps General Hossein Salami to Tehran’s provisional Friday prayers leader Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami.
“Egypt is the heart of the Arab world. Therefore, any political changes or socio-political revolutions in Egypt could repeat in many other Islamic countries. …. Egypt had become a backyard for Israel and geostrategic back-up for the United States’ policies toward Africa,” said General Hossein Salami.
More than 100 people have died and over 2,000 injured during the anti-government protests so far. There is no record of how many thousands protesters have been arrested by the security police.
Half-a-million protesters gathered in Tahrir Square at the city center on Monday, despite heavy military presence. Many slogans in Tahrir Square are directed against the US, Israel and France.
Hosni Mubarak’s two sons, Gamal and Aala, along with their family and fortune are already in London. According to Al-Jazeera, Riyadh has refused to let Mubarak take refuge in Saudi Arabia. However, Tel Aviv is preparing to receive Hosni Mubarak. Israeli embassy in Egypt is totally deserted. The entire Jewish staff returned to Israel on the second day of the protests.
John R. Bradley in his 2008 book, ‘The Land of the Pharaohs on the Brink of a Revolution’ had predicted a mass revolution to topple Hosni Mubarak’s western puppet government. However, he warned the western leaders that if that happened, a theocracy like Islamic Iran might replace it. The book was banned in Egypt.
